How long will it take to sell my wine/whiskey once I list it?
Selling investment-grade wine/whiskey is not an instant process, and there is no guaranteed timeframe. While some sales may happen within weeks, others can take several months—or longer—depending on market demand, buyer interest, and the quantity and provenance of the wine being sold. How fast a wine sells depends on several factors, including:
Asking price: Pricing competitively can speed up the process, while setting your price too high can put off buyers' interest and delay a sale. If your wine has not yet reached peak maturity, a lower asking price can speed up the process.
Age: The age of a wine/whiskey directly impacts its appeal. Wines/whiskeys that are still too young and haven’t reached their optimal drinking window are less likely to find a buyer quickly, as they haven’t yet developed the depth and complexity that secondary market buyers expect.
Selling window: Buyers in the fine wine/whiskey market are often willing to pay a premium for bottles/casks that are ready to enjoy now or in the very near future, but tend to be less interested in buying vintages that still need considerable time to mature. Selling a wine/whiskey too early could mean there are fewer (or no) willing buyers in the market, and draw out the process for closing the sale.
Vintage: The quality and reputation of the vintage also impact sale timelines. High-scoring, celebrated vintages tend to sell quickly at competitive prices.
Supply: If other sellers have listed the same wine at more competitive prices, or the market is simply saturated with comparable offerings, it may take longer to secure a sale.
Note: fine wine and whiskey are long-term, illiquid assets. Selling wine and whiskey outside of its ideal selling window may result in the rate of appreciation not covering costs and expenses, such as Vinovest transaction fees and third-party costs to sell the wine or spirit.
